From 5-7 September 2017, the Hidden Years project hosted an international workshop, concert and public talk series in collaboration with Dr Stephané Vos, project leader of the Interdisciplinary Forum for Popular Music at Africa Open Institute.
The workshop, Record | Memory | Archive, was set up to discuss the opportunities and challenges of the Hidden Years archive project, as well as issues around public access and accessibility and was attended by post graduate students from Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape and Oxford University, community members and musicians. The workshop was closed each day with a public talk delivered by the two international project partners of the Hidden Years Project, Prof Angela Impey (School for Oriental and African Studies, University of London) and Dr Janet Topp Fargion (Curator British Library and Archive).
The last day was finished off with an archival tour, followed by the official opening of the Hidden Years music archive to the public. After a talk by Lizabé Lambrechts and David Marks on the interwoven nature of this archive and Marks’s personal life, a concert was staged by some of the musicians who were documented by David Marks.
The workshop, concert and talks were hosted by the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS), and the Gallery of Stellenbosch University (GUS).
