The EersteRivier (translation: First River) flows from the Jonkershoek Valley, meandering through the town of Stellenbosch. The river carries rich historical memory for residents, whose oral recollections locate the EersteRivier as a central feature of their upbringing. According to some residents, the banks of the river are also where unmarked graves of people harmed by colonial conquest are located. With a strong flow during the winter months (May-August), the riverbanks are often decorated with people escaping the harsh summer heat of the Stellenbosch Valley during the months November to February. The open fields adjacent to the river act as a recreational space for sports activities
