Cameron Hofmeester

BIOGRAPHY

Cameron Hofmeester is an MPhil candidate in Interdisciplinary Arts Studies at the Africa Open Institute, Stellenbosch University (SU). He teaches brass at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre (FPMC) in Paarl, where he serves as Head of the Brass and Woodwind Department. He conducts the Centre’s Senior Wind Band and the newly established Youth Orchestra.

Cameron began his musical journey in his hometown of Ceres as a member of a Christmas Band before studying at SU, where he completed a Diploma in Practical Music, specialising in brass under the late Sean Kierman and Pamela Kierman. He subsequently obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Cape Town and completed a BEd Honours in Educational Development and Democracy at SU in 2025.

Before joining FPMC in 2021, Cameron taught at several schools in the Western Cape, including Heathfield High School, Tygerberg High School, Bellville High School, Wynberg Boys’ Junior School and Pinelands High School. His professional interests include wind bands, music education, teacher development, and creating meaningful ensemble and performance opportunities for young musicians. His BEd Honours research explored music teachers’ perceptions of implementing the Creative Arts: Music Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), with particular attention to teachers’ preparedness, confidence and support needs.

RESEARCH

Cameron’s MPhil research, supervised by Dr Hilde Roos and Mrs Pamela Kierman, has the working title “Music Education in and for South African Military and Service Bands”.

The study explores music education within South Africa’s military and service band sector, with particular interest in how military musicians are prepared for professional practice. It considers the historical development of military music education in South Africa, the role of the South African Army School of Military Music, and broader questions relating to professional training, accreditation and musician development.
