Christine Elizabeth Lucia was born in London and emigrated to South Africa in 1974. She holds an MA in music from Oxford University (1968), a Post-graduate Certificate in Education from Durham University (1969), a PhD in musicology from Rhodes University (1978) and an MA in creative writing from the University of the Witwatersrand (2006). She pursued a career as a concert pianist during the 1970s and 80s before concentrating on research. She taught in music departments at Rhodes University (1976-82), Durban-Westville University (1983-1984), Natal University (1985-1988), Durban-Westville (1989-1997), Rhodes (1997-2002) and Wits University (2002-2007). Prof Lucia headed up the departments at Durban-Westville, Rhodes and Wits between 1989 and 2003, earning a reputation as a change manager through the transformation of curricular and teaching methods, in line with the priorities of post-colonial, post-apartheid, South Africa. After her retirement in 2007 she set up the online publishing imprint, African Composers Edition for the publication of neglected composers from Africa. Three complete editions have been published so far, in conjunction with the copyright holders of the music: Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa (2015), Michael Mosoeu Moerane (2020) and Surendran Reddy (2022). Most of her publications have been on South African music and they include two books, The World of South African Music: A Reader (2005) and Music Notation: A South African Guide (2011). Prof Lucia is currently working on a book on Moerane, to be published by Wits University Press (October 2024). She supervised almost 30 postgraduate theses or dissertations between 1994 and 2022, was Overseas Visiting Scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge 2001-2002, held an Academic Residency at the Bellagio Rockefeller Center in 2009, and has helped to raise almost R2 million in funding for South African music research.
