Kobus Buys

BIOGRAPHY

Based in the Eastern Cape Kobus Buys is a multifaceted musician working across performance, coaching, conducting, research, and arts management. His musical foundation was shaped at the Drakensberg Boys Choir, followed by initial piano studies with Barbara van Wijk. He holds a BMus (Potchefstroom), BMus Hons (University of Pretoria), UPLM and UTLM (UNISA), and an MMus in Performing Arts (Nelson Mandela University). He counts Albie van Schalkwyk, Joseph Stanford, Emma Renzi and Zelda Potgieter as his most influential mentors.

Professionally, Kobus has worked as chorus master, repetiteur and accompanist for institutions including the Pretoria State Theatre, Pro Musica Opera, The Black-Tie Ensemble, and Salon Music. As an accompanist he has collaborated with many of South Africa’s leading singers and instrumentalists in recital, opera, and competition contexts. He lectures part-time at Nelson Mandela University, specialising in piano, vocal coaching, and accompaniment, and is regularly invited to adjudicate at music competitions locally and abroad.

He is the founding Artistic Director of Mandela Bay Opera, where he leads artistic planning and production development aimed at building sustainable opera activity in the Eastern Cape. Alongside his artistic work, he remains active in academic research, having recently presented research papers at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (2024), and the South African Society for Research in Music (2025).

RESEARCH

Kobus’s PhD dissertation is a critical biographical study of South African tenor Deon van der Walt, analysing his career and life within both South African and international operatic contexts. Grounded in life-writing and archival theory, the study examines how artistic legacy is shaped through documentation, omission, and narrative construction. Central sources include the Deon van der Walt Collection housed at Nelson Mandela University, alongside performance documentation, press material, recordings, and interviews with professional associates, family and friends. The project treats biography as analytical reconstruction (not only commemoration), and interrogates how archives, media narratives, and institutional memory influence what is preserved, forgotten, or misrepresented. His supervisor is Hilde Roos.
